Money Scripts: the beliefs that sabotage your money

Equipo FinzcoreApr 24, 2026 6 min read

Your money decisions don't come from logic. They come from beliefs you installed before age twelve, without realizing it. They're called money scripts.

What are money scripts?

They're the unconscious beliefs about money you learned from your family and surroundings. Psychologist Brad Klontz identified four patterns that explain why two people with the same salary end up in opposite financial places.

The 4 patterns

1. Money avoidance

"Money is dirty," "rich people are bad." Those who believe it avoid looking at their accounts, feel guilty spending and, without meaning to, sabotage their own progress.

2. Money worship

"More money will fix everything." It's never enough. It leads to overworking, overspending and still feeling something's missing.

3. Money as status

"I'm worth what I own." You spend to keep up appearances, often with debt, because the car or the clothes are the message.

4. Money vigilance

Anxious savers. They're responsible, but the constant worry keeps them from enjoying what they guard so carefully. It's the healthiest script... taken to the extreme.

How to spot yours

Finish this sentence without thinking: "Money is ______." The first word that comes out reveals your dominant pattern. Then ask something more uncomfortable: who did I learn this from?

How to rewrite it

It's not about erasing the old belief, but placing a new one beside it — more useful and more yours. Swap "money is scarce" for "money is a tool I know how to manage." Repeated and backed by small actions, the new belief eventually wins.
